This PVC repair coupler is used if a sleeve cannot be fitted over the drain pipe. This could be the case if the drain pipe is set in concrete, for example.
The sleeve has a glue socket connection to a reduced spigot. The spigot end fits into a drainpipe, and a drainpipe or fitting can be inserted into the socket end.
